Author Biography

Vusumzi Duma, Department of Sociology University of Fort Hare Alice South Africa

Mr. Vusumzi Duma is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Fort Hare. He first taught at the University of Fort Hare as a Substitute Lecturer from 1/09/1985 up until 30/09/1986. After that, he was briefly employed as an Assistant Teacher at Mareledwane High School in Peddie from 1/07/1987 until 31/12/1988.  Between 1/1/1989 and 31/3/1990, he was employed as a Junior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Vista University. He has served as a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Fort Hare since April 1991. H

He was a member of the executive council of the South African Sociological Association (1998-1999 and 2010-2011). In addition to being the HoD and Deputy-HoD of the Department of Sociology, Mr Duma had been a member of the following academic and administrative structures : University Senate; Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Planning and management Committee, and the Faculty Quality Assurance and Teaching and Learning Committees. In fact, I have contributed to several administrative functions of the University, our Faculty, and department. My University Service activities include: Senate member (1997-1999), Senate member (2006-2010), Chair, Recognition of Prior Learning – Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities (2012- present), Member, Examinations and Graduation Committee - Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities (2007- present), Member, Faculty Planning & management Committee - Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities (2006-2011), Member, Quality Assurance Committee - Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities (2007- present), Member, Teaching & Learning Committee - Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities (2007- present),

Member of the Steering Committee (Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities) working on introducing a new qualification (Bachelor of Social Science - in Human Settlement) to be introduced in the 2015 academic year (November 2011- present). My task included conceptualization and advising on curriculation. I was charged with the responsibility of designing various modules such as Introduction to Social Statistics and Demographic Aspects of Human Settlement.

In 2010, He was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Distinguished Emerging Teachers Award – an honour bestowed on an academic staff member who has shown a sustained interest and skill in teaching in higher education.
