Zambia’s founding president, Kenneth Kaunda, died on 17 June aged 97, the last of the generation of African freedom ghters who had ushered in independence on the continent. He ercely fought minority rule in the region, which was a major factor in the eventual fall of apartheid in South Africa and the delivery of freedom to its oppressed black majority.
