- Aleke Banda joined politics in his late teens, in the struggle for Malawi’s independence in the late 1950s into the early 1960s. He worked with Thandika on the staff of the Malawi News during the independence struggle. Upon independence Aleke joined Ka- muzu Banda’s cabinet but was later arrested and detained by Ka- muzu for 12 years. He was never charged. He died in 2010.
