He is Professor at the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs, UNISA. Professor Lebakeng teaches Strategic Intelligence and Human Security; Statecraft; Intelligence Information Gathering, Analysis and Reporting; Good Governance and Civil Society. Prior to joining the faculty at the TM-School, his academic experience was ass Research Associate at the University of Limpopo, where he had previously lectured in sociology and research methodology for seven years. He also had stints at the then Vista University in Soweto (now University of Johannesburg) teaching sociology and the University of Pretoria teaching Strategic Intelligence and Forecasting. A former Manager of Production and earlier Manager of Strategic Research and Analysis after having been Senior Regional Analyst at the State Security Agency, he travelled widely across continents engaging intelligence services. From February 2007 to December 2008 and February 2011 to December 2014, he was seconded as Political Counsellor at the South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as part of the South Africa’s United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In 2017-2018, he was Head of Intelligence for SADC Preventative Mission in Lesotho (SAPMIL). Professor Lebakeng underwent military and intelligence training in the People’s Republic of China in 1977 and was honourably demobilised from the military in 1997. He is the author of an autobiography titled They Blunted Us: June 16, Exile and Homecoming (Ziable Publisher, 2021)
