Micere Mugo, African American Studies Department, Syracuse University, USA

Micere Githae Mugo (born Madeleine Micere Githae in 1942) is a Kenyan playwright, author, activist, educator and poet. She teaches literature in the Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University. In 1982, she was condemned to exile from Kenya because of her activism under the dictatorship of Daniel Arap Moi, and moved to Zimbabwe and then to the United States. She teaches orature, literature and creative writing. She has published six books, a play co-authored with Ngugi wa Thiong'o, and three monographs. She edits newspapers and helps create the Zimbabwe curriculum. The East African Standard mentions her in its list of the 100 most influential people in Kenya in 2002.
