Abstract
This article grapples with the issue of sacred kingship in the former kingdom of Rwanda. This sacredness has been presented as evidence by some and as an improbability by others. The authors aimed to ask whether this kingship was sacred or not. Based on local sources and theoretical considerations related to the subject, they confirmed the sacredness of this kingship. They then deciphered the ideological role of the kingship: to the unification of the Rwandan territory, the creation of a material culture as a pillar of economic development; to the founding and construction of royalty and kingdom. In short, all this combined contributed to legitimize the power of the king.
