5 - Nigeria’s Foreign and Defence Policies During Babangida's Regime: An Assessment

Abstract

This article investigates the changes to and achievements of Nigeria’s foreign
and defence policies from 1985 to 1993. It also examines the economic,
political, and sociocultural implications of these policies on the nation. The
article argues that despite some identified failures of Ibrahim Babangida’s
regime, certain innovations and actions, especially the foreign and defence
policies that were introduced and carried out by his government, were
significant in nature. The article also addresses the interlocking relationship
between defence and foreign policy execution and concludes with
recommendations on how this can be managed to promote the effectiveness
of Nigeria’s external relations. The article depended largely on archival
materials from the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, supported
by scholarly journal articles, books and newspaper materials.

Dele Jemirade

Dr. Dele Jemirade was born in Kano Nigeria and is a consultant and a researcher in Defense and Security, Arms Control, War, Conflict, Violence, Terrorism, Insurgency, Genocide, African History, Development Studies, Religious Studies, International Relations and Diplomacy. After completing his primary and secondary education from Shahuchi Primary School Kano Nigeria and Government Secondary School Gwale Kano Nigeria respectively, Dr. Jemirade obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Ilorin Nigeria, a Master of Arts in History (Strategic Studies) from the University of Lagos Nigeria, a Master of Arts in History (Development) from the University of Guelph Ontario Canada, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in History from York University Toronto Ontario Canada. Dr. Jemirade has published articles in different esteemed peer-reviewed journals. His current research is on “Wars, Conflicts, Violence, and Genocides: The Impact of Illegal Arms Supply on Development in Africa.”
